Oddworld Inhabitants cult-classic puzzle-platformer, Abe’s Oddessey, is currently available on Steam for free. The offer is for a limited time only, and during this period the rest of the Oddworld franchise will have a heavy discount.
The title, originally released in 1997 to critical acclaim, puts players in the appendages of Abe, a Mudoken janitor working at a large meat processing plant. The plants owners, a race of beings known as the Glukkons, have essentially wiped out most of the native fauna after enslaving Abe’s world, and Abe discovers they are considering turning to their Mudoken workforce for a new source of meat. Horrified, Abe endeavours to escape using his agility and mystic powers, and help free fellow Mudokens along the way.
The game features challenging puzzles, and fairly unique game-play abilities for the time – Abe can possess others and use their weapons, and talk using a simple interaction system based on a realised Modoken language.
The game has three sequels at time of writing: Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee, and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath. The Oddbox, a collection of the franchise, is available on Steam at a discounted price of around $2.60 USD.
