Guild Wars is shuffling the deck. NC, ArenaNet, and bilibili have revealed Mistbound, a new free-to-play digital collectible card game set in the Guild Wars universe.
Developed for PC and mobile platforms, Mistbound is officially licensed by ArenaNet, developed by NC, and globally published by bilibili. It also marks the first digital card game spin-off for Guild Wars, which is a pretty big draw from the franchise deck.
As per the press release, Mistbound aims to bridge Guild Wars’ MMO legacy with the deckbuilding strategy genre. Expect familiar lore, iconic characters, fantasy flair, and a few tactical tricks that go beyond simply slapping cards onto a board and hoping for the best.
Mistbound Adds Movement to Guild Wars Card Battles
Mistbound puts players in the boots of a commander and drops them onto a dynamic 5 x 3 tactical grid. From there, players deploy cards, reposition units, and respond to enemy movements turn by turn.
This system is called Dynamic Movement Gameplay, and it is the big twist here. Rather than keeping cards locked in place, Mistbound allows commanders and units to move in multiple directions during each turn.
That means players can use knockbacks, pulls, flanking opportunities, and shifting attack or defence positions to outplay opponents. In other words, your cards are not just sitting there looking pretty. They are getting stuck in.
ArenaNet Studio Head Colin Johanson said the team wanted to give Guild Wars fans a new way to play together, inspired by the franchise’s card game roots. He also highlighted the chance to bring the characters, creatures, and sounds of Tyria into a competitive PvP CCG space.

Commanders, Professions, and Tactical Trickery
Mistbound features a Commander × Profession System, with iconic Guild Wars characters entering the battlefield as playable commanders. Each commander brings unique abilities, traits, and a distinct tactical identity.
The system draws inspiration from Guild Wars 2’s nine professions. Players can freely pair commanders and professions, creating new combinations and different ways to approach each match.
NC producer Hwang Sunwoo explained that the team wanted to avoid making individual cards too complicated. Instead, Mistbound places much of the strategy on the battlefield itself. That should give players more choices over time, without turning every card into a tiny novel with attack stats.
Game Designer Baek Hakjun, better known as Kranich, also described Mistbound as approachable at first. Players can learn by placing units and engaging in combat, before gradually digging into the deeper satisfaction of reading and controlling the full board.
A Familiar Guild Wars World, Rebuilt for CCG Fans
Mistbound also leans into the series’ audiovisual identity. The press release highlights returning characters, refreshed visuals, original music contributions, and character-driven voice performances.
The goal is to offer something that feels familiar to long-time Guild Wars fans, while still giving new players a fresh strategic battlefield to explore.
Single-player and multiplayer modes are planned, with community-driven content also part of the wider pitch. Since this is a CCG, that community angle matters. Meta shifts, events, feedback, and content creation can make or break a card game faster than you can say “nerf this immediately”.
bilibili will handle global publishing duties. The press release describes the company as a major force in China’s content and gaming communities, with strong audience retention, a large creator network, and experience in global distribution.
Mistbound Platforms and Future Play Opportunities
Mistbound is currently in development for PC and mobile platforms. No release date has been confirmed in the supplied announcement.
Players looking for future play opportunities can follow updates through the official Mistbound website and YouTube channel.
So yes, Guild Wars is getting a card game. But thanks to the grid-based movement, active commanders, and tactical profession pairings, Mistbound sounds like it wants to do more than politely ask you to draw three and end turn.
