We’re back with yet another installment of Respawning’s Let’s Talk series, where every Friday we get every one of our charismatic writers together to discuss a new topic! This week, with the recent release of Spiderman: Far From Home, Respawning have been discussing/arguing which of the versions of the famous Webcrawler is the best. Stemming from Luke & Mikey’s love for Tom Holland we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to discuss ALL THE SPIDERMANS!

Luke

It’s gotta be Spiderman Noir for me. The dark, noiresque version of my favourite superhero is absolutely the best because his attitude reminds me so much of Spidey from 2099… No wait 2099 is my favourite.

Reimagined as Spiderman from a dark future who isn’t held back by not wanting to kill 2099’s darkness is undercut with the comedy and innocence of 616’s Spiderman who has to be my favourite…

Fuck. I just cannot choose a favourite Spiderman, literally every version of the web crawler is my absolute favourite and has me excited beyond belief – BRING ON THE MULTIVERSE.

Also my favourite is Miles.

Now there’s a difference here – Are we talking characters, or aesthetics?

In terms of mere appearances, it has to be Hobart Brown, AKA ‘The Anarchic Spider-Man’. He’s a fairly obscure Spider-Verse character with a foul mouth and an electric guitar. As the frontman of a band called the Spider-Slayers, he’s all about Punk Rock and fighting the power. Given that I’m known to don a denim jacket and enjoy a good headbang myself, it makes sense that this Wall-Crawler has exactly the kind of look I identify with. Miles Morales in ‘Spider-Verse’, with his stark black-and-red look and fantastic hip-hop soundtrack

But as far as actual characters go? I hate to say it, but my heart belongs to the MCU. Tom Holland’s performance as good ol’ Peter Parker is relatable, hilarious, and a joy to watch in combat. He’s Spider-man as I remember him from my childhood, giving me that same joy updated to fit my 21-year-old self. Have you seen ‘Far From Home’ yet? You should, it’s fantastic.

Does Werewolf Spiderman from the end of Marvel Zombies Vs. Army of Darkness count? In all seriousness, it’s hard for me to say which webcrawler is the actual best. Miles Morales is a cool take on the traditional hero, as is SpiderGwen, but can you really ever top the original? But what version of the original do you go with in that case?!

So, if only to decide on one, I’m going to have to go with the Peter from Into the Spiderverse. Er, the fat one, not the dead one. He’s sort of screwed up his life, but he’s still got a street-smart attitude, and in the film he rediscovers what it means to be a hero – and a mentor. I think he’ll return in the inevitable sequel – probably more like the typical Peter Parker we know, and I think that’ll be interesting to see.

Mikey

God damn this is tough. A part of me wants to go with the video game version of Peter Parker from 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 as that version kind of feels like a best-of given the amount of outfits you can change into but now thinking about it, it feels like a cop out. I do like Spider-Man Noir a lot, ESPECIALLY the Nicholas Cage version from Into The Spiderverse… Ah screw it, much like Will I have to go with Tom Holland.

Just go back and read any piece I’ve ever written that involves the MCU’s Spider-Man and my love for Tom Holland is clear to see. I’ve said it before and I will say it again – Tom Holland is Peter Parker! I would always imagine Spidey as a mishmash of all my favourite versions whether that’s from an animated series, comic, movie or video game but in recent years I now go strait to Tom Holland. He’s done an incredible job in the role and long may it continue.

Miles is easily my favourite Spiderman. I absolutely love into the spiderverse it’s one of my fav films of all time – I think Miles is relatable and funny and real! I think he makes a great Spiderman.

Spiderman! He’s Amazing, he’s Spectacular, he’s the quippy little punk with a lot of heart and a lot of variations! With Far From Home out in cinemas, I think it’s time to talk about my favourite Movie in the Spiderman universe. Can you guess which one it is? It’s Into the Spiderverse! Of course. I dunno why, but the Miles Morals depicted in it is just so much more relatable and likable than the plethora of Peter Parkers… Though I must be honest, Noir being voiced by what I’m sure is Nicholas Cage is just too perfect. SpiderGwen is also an awesome character in the movie!

My favourite Spiderman suit is the Iron Spider from Avengers: Infinity War. It’s the massive mechanical arms / legs that do it for me and just make Spiderman look the coolest that he can be, and also the most imposing. Strap a couple guns to them to complete the look for me, but I guess that isn’t really Spids style…

Tom Holland definitely makes the best Spiderman, but I thoroughly enjoyed both of Andrew Garfield’s performances in the ‘Amazing’ films, and really wish Sony had rounded his films off with a Spiderman versus the Sinister Six film to bring his trilogy to a close.

Joe

For me – whilst I prefer Tom Holland’s interpretation of the webslinger – there’s a part of me that just can’t help but return to the campy humour and energetic acting from the one and only Toby Maguire; everything from the facial reactions, to the voiced lines, to the bad CG and incredibly awkward Symbiote-induced dancing scenes in Spiderman 3… God, I love it.
