Welcome one and all to our Saturday club feature ‘Controversial Club’. As so much of our content is positive, charming and a lovely read we thought we’d start a weekly article where we can get a bit of rage out, or just generally be dicks!

I introduce our controversial club, a place where we can all write about things that get on our nerves, rub us the wrong way…

This week we’re talking about Cross Platform Gaming… But on Mobiles! With the recent tests of PUBG and Fortnite: Battle Royale on Android & iOS, the future of gaming could be held in your pocket on the same device you use to text your grandma… But will it succeed? Is it viable? Or is it a far-gone fallacy? Let’s discuss!!

Ben

This is something I can get behind. I have some friends who (Unfortunately) play games on a XBone, and as a PS4 user, I just don’t get the chance to play with them any more. But being able to have the choice between being able to play a game on either console with friends sounds like an awesome idea. This is technically already available with some games able to go between console and PC, but as of yet, there is no cross play with XBone and PS4.

And it’s all because PlayStation are stone walling any attempt from Microsoft about linking the gaming services. Microsoft have even come out and straight up said that they would like to get cross play working between the two devices. Now we just need to try persuade Sony the give the go ahead. Or we just make a homebrew kit to make it ourselves with a custom firmware…

Will

Depends how you frame it, I guess.

Mobile gaming has always had the issue that modern handsets have a touch screen. That means that whole certain control schemes are far more intuitive, others are butchered. Just look at how difficult it is to play Call of Duty or PUBG with your thumbs covering 1/3 of the screen.

In principle, I want all players to be able to play games togetehr regardless of arbitrary legal or business walls. That’s why I think it’s amoral that Xbox and Psx players can’t share servers all the time.

But mobile is a fundamentally different control scheme. So unless it’s cross platform in the sense that Android, iOS, and windows mobile can compete, I can’t get behind it.

Man this is a weird one, so I think it’s really cool that a lotta games are doing this whole cross platform thing. Like Street Fighter V, Fortnite, Rocket League and all that but I think they should really regulate some games like maybe FPS games and highly competitive 3rd person games to only be limited to consoles and not PC’s because honestly if you could play Overwatch on your PS4 against people who are also on PC then I think we can already tell who’s going to be the winner in almost every match.

The same argument can also be said about Street Fighter I guess since when that game came out the big talk of the town was the 8 frames of input lag blah blah blah and how the PC version is way better and has less input lag blah blah blah and how those 8 frames can lead to life and death. Although I really do understand where fighting game players are coming from you really just gotta shut up about this whole 8 frame ( I think it got updated to like 6 frames or something but people still complain) situation cause goddamn you’ll find players who can dominate you and not even cares bout those precious frames. Just get good. I think I got distracted. Yes.
