SQUARE ENIX has revealed FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, the first HD-2D FINAL FANTASY game, during the latest Nintendo Direct showcase. So yes, pixel art fans, your time in the Crystal-powered spotlight has arrived.
As per the press release, FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE blends classic FINAL FANTASY flavour with a modern console RPG structure. It is based on the first story arc of the mobile game FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius, but this is not just a quick port wearing a nicer coat. SQUARE ENIX says the game has been refined and rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience.
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE brings HD-2D to the series
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE tells a tale of Crystals, because naturally it does. The game features a strategic turn-based battle system with a modern twist, along with returning series staples such as chocobos, espers, and airships.
The reveal also confirmed appearances from several beloved FINAL FANTASY characters, including Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light. They will all be presented in retro-inspired HD-2D visuals designed to push the limits of pixel art.
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE launch date and editions
FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE launches on 22nd October 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows.
The standard edition will be available at a suggested retail price of US$49.99. A Digital Deluxe Edition will include the base game and useful in-game items for US$59.99.
