Jagex has launched the RuneScape Player Avatar update, bringing a major visual refresh to the long-running MMORPG. As per the press release, this is the biggest visual overhaul to hit RuneScape in over a decade, which is fairly massive when your character has been through 25 years of quests, capes, chaos, and questionable fashion choices.
The update is available now in RuneScape on PC, Steam, iOS, and Android. It forms part of the game’s year-long Road to Restoration strategy, which began in January during RuneScape’s 25th anniversary year.
RuneScape Player Avatar update modernises characters
The Player Avatar update adds a more refined, high-fidelity avatar head and body model. It also includes matching chatheads, so your character’s face can now look a little less like it has survived several graphical eras without sleep.
Players can also expect new hairstyles for male and female characters. In addition, Jagex has refreshed existing hairstyles, starting game-based outfits, and several commonly selected base items from Thessalia’s shop.
This is not the end of the Avatar project either. A second part is planned for this autumn, with more details due in the coming months.
Road to Restoration continues through RuneScape’s 25th anniversary year
The Player Avatar update is one of several changes tied to RuneScape’s Road to Restoration. Announced during the RuneScape Ahead livestream in January, the strategy is designed to improve the game across visuals, onboarding, combat, and overall player experience.
Jagex has already delivered several updates this year. RuneScape’s user interface was refined at the end of January, improving visibility, menus, icons, and navigation.
In mid-February, early game rebalancing adjusted the first few hours of play. Skills such as Hunter, Thieving, Farming, and Herblore were rebalanced. Early quests, including Cook’s Assistant and Sheep Shearer, were also tweaked to improve the opening experience.
March brought a combat overhaul for RuneScape’s original melee, ranged, and magic styles. The update made combat more intuitive and easier to learn, while adding a simpler but deeper synergy between abilities.
Jagex also removed much of DailyScape in March. According to the press release, these daily activities had been flagged through community feedback as chorelike. They also pressured players to log in every day and offered rewards that outweighed much of the game’s core content.
Looking ahead, RuneScape’s Road to Restoration will continue with Visual Regrounding. This aims to create a more consistent fantasy identity across the game by removing items and cosmetics that feel thematically out of place, including intrusive particle effects. Yes, the Fury Shark Suit has been put on notice.
With the RuneScape Player Avatar update now live, Gielinor’s heroes are getting a proper glow-up. After all, saving the world is important, but looking presentable while doing it does not hurt.
