Remember Among Us? The game that turned all of us into suspicious little astronauts during lockdown? Well, it’s back, kind of. Among Us 3D gives the classic a fresh coat of paint and a new perspective, but does it still hold up in 2025? I jumped back in to find out, and it’s ended up taking me on a trip down memory lane, let’s talk about that.
Back to 2018
I first played Among Us in 2018 with a friend I was just getting to know. We wanted something simple to play on our phones, and stumbled into this weird little social deduction game. We didn’t really play it properly. Instead, we’d hop on random servers, chat to strangers, and mess around. It was more about the laughs than the game itself. We got bored after a while and dropped it. At that point, barely anyone knew Among Us even existed.
The Pandemic Years
Jump to 2020, the year COVID-19 shut everything down. Like a lot of people, gaming became my lifeline. Discord calls, online classes, and hours poured into games like Fortnite, Animal Crossing, and Jackbox. That’s when Among Us blew up, and suddenly, everyone wanted to play it.
It became the go-to game for catching up with old mates and making new ones. And this time, I actually knew how to play. We’d jump into lobbies, accuse each other, lie through our teeth, and somehow have a blast doing it. The simple gameplay, catchy music, and bright art were all solid, but it was the accessibility that really made it shine.
VR, Merch and Fading Hype
By 2022, the hype had slowed. We’d moved on to other games, but Among Us was still hanging around. It even got a VR version, which I mostly saw through videos of adults terrifying kids. Weird, but funny. I didn’t bother trying it myself.
Among Us 3D – Now in 2025
Firing up Among Us 3D in 2025 felt a bit like going back in time. I hadn’t played the original in years, and honestly, I didn’t expect much. Turns out, it’s just Among Us with a 3D twist. A new perspective, cleaner visuals, a few cute interactions, but the game remains the same at its core.
I played one proper match, and it was fine. Not bad, just familiar. I’ve done this before, and it was way more fun with my mates. But something clicked when I ended up in a lobby that wasn’t starting. Random players were chatting, joking, just hanging out. It took me right back to those early days in 2018.
I met a guy from Indonesia, took a photo of him in a silly little “Employee of the Month” corner in the cafeteria, then got kicked out of the lobby. Didn’t even get a screenshot. But that one moment Reminded me why Among Us worked so well: it connects people.
Final Verdict
Among Us 3D isn’t a game-changer. It’s not trying to be. It’s just another way to play a game that, in many ways, defined a generation of online play. If you’ve got friends and a bit of time to kill, it’s still a good time.
