RuneScape: Dragonwilds has unleashed Umbral Sands, its final major Steam Early Access update before the game’s full 1.0 launch on 15 September 2026.
Jagex has rolled out the new update today, giving players their first look at Dragonwilds’ take on RuneScape’s iconic desert biome. Naturally, it comes with blistering heat, nasty beasties, and a dragon called Fuzan who sounds deeply unlikely to respect your personal space.
The update is live now on Steam Early Access. RuneScape: Dragonwilds will launch in full on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and Nintendo Switch 2 on 15 September.
Welcome To Umbral Sands, Bring Shade
As per the press release, Umbral Sands introduces a new desert region built around a dynamic environmental system.
Players will need to survive the draining heat of the sun by using shade, hastily built shelters, and nighttime travel. That should make wandering across the dunes feel a little more strategic than simply jogging into the horizon and hoping your hydration bar believes in you.
The new region also adds pools of quicksand, which can be crossed more easily thanks to one of the update’s flashier arrivals: magic carpets.
Fuzan Brings The Heat
Umbral Sands also introduces Fuzan, the blazing tyrant. This new dragon hunts players after nightfall once the corrupted sun has set, while lesser red dragon minions add even more danger to the area.
To deal with Fuzan, players will need to head into the Fight Cave. There, they will face waves of enemies and molten lava before taking on the apex predator himself.
The Fight Cave is fully replayable too, with advanced modes, rare crafting rewards, and powerful Vestiges available for players brave enough to go back in. Because apparently one lava-filled dragon showdown was not enough.

New Mounts, Gear, Enemies, And Allies
The update brings several iconic RuneScape items into Dragonwilds for the first time. Adamant, Red Dragonhide, and Yew have all arrived as new crafting materials.
That means players can now craft Adamant tier gear, Red Dragonhide leather armour, and Yew bows and staffs.
Magic carpets also join the mount lineup, giving players a new way to zip across Umbral Sands. New colour variants add extra customisation for both the flying rugs and other player mounts.
Players will also meet new enemies, including kalphites and the kot-haar. On the friendlier side, the Menaphite god of the dead, Icthlarin, will be available to help. Handy, really, given the whole deadly desert dragon situation.
The Road To 1.0
Umbral Sands is the final major update for RuneScape: Dragonwilds before version 1.0 arrives.
The full launch will add the Scorned Wilderness Raid and a boss fight with Kuldra, bringing that storyline to an epic conclusion.
Jagex has also launched Chinese Simplified, Japanese, and Korean language support alongside Umbral Sands, opening Dragonwilds up to even more players.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is available now on Steam Early Access. Version 1.0 launches on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on 15 September 2026. It will arrive the same day on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, including PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers for subscribers, and Xbox Series consoles.
