Paper Cult has sharpened the axes and sounded the war horns. Tears of Metal will launch in Early Access on PC on 22nd July 2026, bringing its medieval hack-and-slash roguelike action to Steam and the Microsoft Store.
As per the press release, the game will also be available through Xbox Game Pass for the Microsoft Store. An Xbox version is planned to arrive before the end of 2026.
That is a lot of metal. Possibly too much metal. Actually, no. Carry on.
A Scottish Battalion, a Dragon Meteor, and Lots of Very Bad Days for Enemies
Developed by Montreal studio Paper Cult, Tears of Metal is a medieval hack-and-slash co-op roguelike about reclaiming your island with the help of a formidable Scottish battalion.
Players will carve through hordes of enemies across vast battlefields, either solo or with friends. As the campaign pushes deeper into the trenches, the story will reveal more about the mysterious Dragon Meteor and the enemy invasion that followed it.
The Early Access launch will include three Acts, each featuring unique enemies, Elites, and Bosses. Players can also expect three playable Heroes, Village upgrades, Emblems, Equipment, and Companions, with more content planned for the coming months.
The game has already picked up some serious momentum, too. Since its reveal at Summer Game Fest in June 2024, Tears of Metal has gathered over 400,000 Steam wishlists.
Builds, Battalion Upgrades, and Co-op Chaos
Tears of Metal leans hard into the roguelike fun. Players can collect powerful upgrades and combine them with more than 100 artefacts to create brutal builds.
Each run offers new ways to smash through the opposition, while multiple playable heroes bring their own styles to the front line. As the battles get messier, players will also face the dangerous power mined from the Dragon Stone.
Between campaigns, your soldiers are not just sitting around polishing swords and arguing over the best biscuit. They gain permanent skills, making them stronger for future fights.
Players can also expand their settlement, unlock new shops, buy permanent upgrades, and take on tougher challenges for greater rewards. Special objectives will reveal new artefacts, playable characters, cosmetics, upgrades, combos, and secrets across the war-torn island.
For solo players and co-op squads alike, the game features more than 45 handcrafted environments with plenty of scenarios and objectives to tackle.
