Swordcery is available now in Steam Early Access, bringing roguelike ARPG action, procedurally generated dungeons and enough magical swords to make any collector slightly concerned about storage space.
Developed by Temple Door Games, Swordcery follows Colt as he attempts to save the kingdom of Armorial from a spreading corruption. His solution involves traditional blades, elemental weapons and, apparently, swords that are also living creatures.
Yes, one of them might be a shark.
Swordcery Turns Every Sword Into Something Special
At the centre of Swordcery is its collection of spellbound blades.
Each sword has its own story, purpose and unique ability known as its Swordcery. These abilities range from relatively sensible magical attacks to things that sound like somebody was left unsupervised during a design meeting.
Players can throw swords like boomerangs, crash down as a bolt of lightning and trap enemies inside cardboard boxes.
There is also a sword-fridgerator that summons ice cubes and a kabob rapier capable of launching tasty ingredients.
Video games are doing just fine.
As per the press release, players will discover new blades and upgrades during each run. This lets you tweak your playstyle, experiment with different weapons and hopefully find something even stranger than whatever you were already carrying.
Save Armorial One Run at a Time
The trouble begins when a gigantic blade plunges into Armorial and brings a rain of smaller swords with it.
This mysterious weapon starts draining the kingdom’s power, while the sword-filled weather situation continues getting worse.
Colt, an unlikely hero who gains the ability to wield these fallen blades, must fight back against the Celestial corruption threatening Armorial.
Thankfully, he has plenty of weapons to work with.
Every blade belongs to a particular Sword Class, with each class featuring its own attacks, combos and combat strengths. Different terrain and encounters may favour certain classes, so players will need to learn which weapons work best for each situation.
Swordcery abilities can then be combined with those class-specific attacks to create different approaches to combat.

Procedural Dungeons and Plenty of Replayability
Swordcery is built around repeated runs through procedurally generated dungeons.
Each attempt can bring new swords, relics and Sword Class upgrades, giving players more ways to adjust their build and approach the next run differently.
Temple Door Games is a two-person studio whose members previously helped create cinematics for 2018’s God of War.
