RetroSpace is out now on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, bringing its mix of immersive sim systems, cosmic horror and gloriously questionable ’70s style to players for $19.99 / €19.99 / £16.99.
There is also a launch discount available during the first week.
Set aboard the Aurora 5 space station, RetroSpace puts players in the boots of a janitor who suddenly finds themselves dealing with a sentient black hole, mutated creatures, broken time and the fairly minor inconvenience of potentially having to save humanity.
So, not your average shift.
Sneak, hack or go full mutant
RetroSpace is built around player choice, with multiple ways to tackle encounters across Aurora 5.
You can sneak past enemies, hack systems, create distractions, set traps, uncover alternate routes or simply fight your way through.
The station itself is heavily interconnected, with shortcuts, hidden paths and previously inaccessible areas opening up as you explore.
Security systems and environmental hazards can also be turned against enemies, leaning into the kind of systemic problem-solving expected from an immersive sim.
Mutamods can help, with a catch
One of RetroSpace’s stranger systems is Mutamods, which grant new abilities for combat, stealth, exploration and movement.
Players can build towards increasingly bizarre mutations, including tentacle-based abilities and mind control, but upgrades may come with permanent and unexpected side effects.
Death is not quite the end either.
Aurora 5 can clone the player repeatedly, although each resurrection can bring cloning degeneration. You will also need to recover your lost equipment from your previous body, because apparently dying once was not inconvenient enough.
Deluxe Edition and Steam bundles also available
RetroSpace also has a Deluxe Edition, which includes the base game and the unOfficial Janitors’ Handbook.
The 48-page digital artbook features concept art, character and creature designs, locations, equipment, weapons and in-universe propaganda, alongside handwritten notes and hints from Aurora 5’s janitors.
On Steam, RetroSpace is also available in bundles with System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster, Void Bastards and Gloomwood.
