Overthrown has officially left Early Access behind and launched into version 1.0, with the full game now available on Steam, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5.
As per the press release, the full release also arrives with Overthrown’s biggest content drop yet in the form of the Airship Update. So if building a kingdom while absolute chaos rains down from the skies sounds like your thing, this is very much your moment.
In Overthrown, players rule as a monarch armed with an ancient soul-stealing crown, using magical powers to build, defend and grow a kingdom in a hostile wilderness. Of course, being in charge also means dealing with bandits, mutants, and an increasing pile of trouble, either solo or in up to six-player co-op.
The Airship Update takes Overthrown’s chaos into the skies
The main event in Overthrown 1.0 is the new Airship Update, which adds aerial warfare to the city-building survival mix.
Players can now build and command airships, then send them off to attack outlaw camps from above. There is a catch, naturally. Airships need a hefty amount of mana upkeep to stay operational, so players will need to balance raw power with the grim reality of keeping the whole thing running.
And because life is never simple, the outlaws get airships too. That turns the skies into a full-blown strategic arms race rather than a one-sided victory lap.
To help deal with that, the update adds the Cannon Tower, a new defensive structure built for direct fire against both airships and ground troops. Unlike indirect siege weapons, cannon towers are designed for more immediate and precise defence. Better still, or worse depending on which side of the cannon you are standing on, both players and outlaws can use them.
New outlaw enemies and a nasty new monster shake things up
The Airship Update is also making outlaw camps more dangerous. According to the press release, camps are now larger and more complex, with new structures and three new enemy types to worry about.
Scrappers act as support units, hanging back to repair and rebuild damaged defences. Ringleaders are heavily armoured elite enemies, limited to one per camp. Then there are Firestarters, stealthy saboteurs that slip into settlements at night, set fires, and vanish again. Which is, frankly, quite rude.
The update also introduces a new creature called the Devourer. If Snappers are left unchecked, they can evolve into these massive beasts over time. Once that happens, they are capable of consuming entire buildings and even ships, which feels like a fairly strong hint to not ignore them.
New levels, new ecosystems and launch discounts
Rounding things out are three new levels, each built around distinct ecosystems. One of them, the Highland Plateau, is designed to spotlight verticality, aerial combat, and environmental strategy, which fits neatly with the new airship focus.
As per the press release, Overthrown is also available now on Xbox Game Pass. The game is launching with discounts too, including 40% off on PC via Steam and Xbox Series X|S, and 25% off on PlayStation 5.
All told, Overthrown 1.0 sounds like a proper full-release swing rather than a quiet exit from Early Access. New platforms, new threats, airships in the sky, and monsters that eat buildings. Nice and normal, then.
