A grand adventure officially sets sail today. DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is now available, bringing one of the series’ most beloved entries back in a freshly rebuilt form.
As per the press release, this is a bold remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, launching on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.
A classic journey, rebuilt from the ground up
In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, players step into the boots of a bright-eyed hero whose quiet island life is upended after discovering an ancient tablet. That discovery sends the party back through time, where they learn entire lands have been sealed away by malevolent forces.
As more tablet fragments are uncovered, new routes to the past open up. What starts as a search for answers quickly becomes a world-spanning fight for the future, and one that grows bigger and more beautiful the deeper you go.
Hand-crafted visuals with a familiar soul
This reimagining stays faithful to the heart of the original while giving it a full modern glow-up. Iconic character designs by Akira Toriyama have been rebuilt in a charming 3D style inspired by real-world dolls, while towns, dungeons, and landscapes take on a diorama-like, hand-crafted look.
The result is a world that feels nostalgic and new at the same time, very much Dragon Quest, just sharper around the edges.
Streamlined story and deeper side content
While the main story sticks closely to the original, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined offers a more streamlined experience overall. Optional side quests, stories, and minigames expand the narrative for those who want more, adding extra depth without slowing the main adventure.
It is a cleaner, more approachable version of a famously massive RPG.
A revamped battle system with new tricks
Combat has been significantly overhauled to deliver more dynamic turn-based battles. The updated vocation system introduces Moonlighting, letting characters use two vocations at once, alongside adrenaline-fuelled Vocational Perks that trigger when characters get fired up.
There is also a brand-new Monster Master vocation, complete with a Positive Reinforcement perk that summons powerful monsters to overwhelm enemies. It is classic Dragon Quest combat, but with far more flexibility and spectacle.
Familiar faces and sprawling worlds
Players will journey alongside memorable characters like Kiefer, the prince of Estard, and Maribel, the daughter of a mayor, meeting a wide cast of allies and enemies along the way.
Exploration remains central to the experience. By collecting fragments and completing tablets, players unlock and expand multiple worlds filled with towns, dungeons, quests, and secrets waiting to be uncovered.
Demos, bonuses, and deluxe extras
A free demo is available on all platforms, with save data carrying over to the full game. Players who do so will receive a “Day Off Dress” cosmetic for Maribel.
Digital purchases also include a platform-specific Slime Shield. Meanwhile, the Digital Deluxe Edition adds a White Wolf costume for Ruff, plus three DLC packs, including a Battle Arena challenge featuring demon kings from the Erdrick Trilogy and costume sets inspired by Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is available now for £59.99 equivalent pricing, rated E10+. If you missed it the first time around, or just fancy losing yourself in a massive RPG again, this is a very good excuse to set sail.
