2024 proved to be as big of a year for album releases as I predicted, with 20 to consider for placement as the top five of the year. Without further ado let’s jump straight in to my favourite albums that released!
5) Oblivion – The Underground Avengers
The only album from the list that I predicted to make my top five at the start of the year to actually make it; Oblivion is the final Underground Avengers album and a tremendous send-off for the supergroup. Tracks like Sideshow and Predators really remind me of why I’ve been such a huge fan of their music in the first place and I sincerely hope they are not serious when they say this could be their final record ever, as their dynamic is simply too good to not continue to utilise.
4) 31 – House of Krazees
I wanted more wicked shit Twiztid, and with this record that’s exactly what I got. Along with The R.O.C who they originally started rapping with long ago in the 90s, the return of House of Krazees is an album I did not know how much I wanted until I had it. Now it’s here I have listened to it at least once every other day, and I continue to return to my favourite track on the album, Thorn, at least once a day.
3) Anemoia – Ouija Macc & Darby 0’Trill
You only have to listen to any Ouija Macc project to understand how he can churn out three or four albums in a single calendar year (back-handed compliment). That said, I don’t want to undermine the quality of the production on the tracks that we get, and I sincerely believe Anemoia to be his strongest album released to date. This record is one I have likely played the most throughout the year, and is a rare example of an album I can bump while in any mood.
2) I’ll Tell You When I Want To Laugh By Laughing – Super Famous Fun Time Guys
I’ll Tell You When I Want To Laugh By Laughing has not budged from its number two spot that it secured in the first half of 2024. Super Famous Fun Time Guys also released a separate album in the summer (They Wouldn’t Let Us Film Here, Vol. 1) that I also hugely enjoyed and considered cheating my own system to make them joint second place album of the year.
This album was a pleasant surprise to me having not really been into these guys as rappers previously. After hearing how strong the album was from fans on its release day I decided to check it out to see if I had been wrong in my view of them in the past. I had. I was thoroughly impressed after just one listen, and standout tracks like Laugh Now Maybe and Sote2Nelf are always in rotation in my Spotify playlist.
According to my Spotify Wrapped SFFTG were my third most played artists of this year, which considering I only started listening to them in 2024 is quite impressive.
Album of 2024 – Have A Vice Life – Clockworc
What can I say other than Clockworc’s debut solo album is a resounding success as far as I’m concerned. I love nearly every song on Have A Vice Life, as I do skip Pain from time to time, but Get Lost and The Menu are comfortably two of my favourite songs of the decade so far. Even while going through all the records I considered for my favourite of 2024, I still simply cannot play Get Lost just once, and have to run it back to the start once or twice before I’ll let the next song play.
Coming alongside the news that Gorilla Voltage, a group who ruined my entire 2019 by disbanding, have reunited and are currently working on a new album; their first in six years, has me hugely excited. With a new Gorilla Voltage record set to drop in 2025, will Clockworc be able to secure two albums of the year back to back? Only time will tell!
Despite not being featured on any of my top five albums of 2024, I have to give a special mention to my favourite song released in 2024, one which I am confident will be most people’s favourite from its record, and easily top three if not that: the hauntingly comforting final track off Darcc Planet – Deincarnation – by Ouija Macc!
In the meantime thank you for reading and I’ll be back soon with my favourite games of 2024 ranking!
