I don’t see why I can’t just have whatever I want in life. I think it’s pretty reasonable that whatever I demand should be given to me, no questions asked…
This week I thought I’d spout my views on the five video game protagonists that I want – nay – demand receive more games and I insist you read on below to see who I have chosen.
I’d say Edward Kenway is one of my favourite Assassins Creed protagonists ever. Sure, Evie Frye and Bayek of Siwa are tremendous characters, but Edward always had the ability to make me laugh and his almost effortless combat prowess just made him so much more fun to play as. I don’t think I’m alone in saying Black Flag stands out as one of the best entries in the long running series, as who didn’t want to have a swashbuckling pirate adventure on the high seas?!
Ubisoft were kind enough to provide answers to what happened to him after the events of his game by revealing in Assassins Creed: Syndicate that he was killed by Templars in his London home twelve years after leaving the Jackdaw, doubtless after putting up a hell of a good fight.
I understand that Prototype 2 provided a solid ending for the franchise, but that’s not enough to stop me wishing that Heller would make a re-appearance at some point. I always hoped there would be a way that Radical Entertainment could construe a way to have a third game in the franchise where the mysterious and oft-mentioned Pariah could finally appear as the villain that they were meant to be. I’m confident that the demise of the studio was one of the main factors behind this not happening, but still, I want it!
Delsin Rowe is an annoying prick, granted. An annoying prick with potentially the best Conduit power from the franchise, absolutely. The ability to copy other Conduits powers and switch between them on the fly was a great mechanic and built superbly on Cole McGrath’s ability in Infamous 2 to switch between his own lightning and Kuo and Nix’s ice and fire powers respectively (Dependant on your game Karma choices).
I do already feel a touch of resentment towards Sucker Punch for stating numerous times in the promotion of this game that the smoke powers shown in the E3 demos were ‘the tip of the iceberg’ of Delsin’s powers. This led me and others to believe you wouldn’t just be able to count the final number of powers on one frostbitten hand, though to give them some credit, each of the four powers (Smoke, neon, video and concrete) were detailed and varied enough that each of them could have supported their own smaller game. Of course, they did this with the neon power for Infamous: First Light, but I digress…
I am clueless as to why there hasn’t been an Infamous game for FIVE YEARS as the limitless potential of Delsin’s power copying ability could be explored so much more and in incredibly interesting ways, so it makes sense that he gets another game to achieve his real creative fulfilment.
Bonus point: Here’s some ideas for powers that would be amazing: paint, metal, shadow, and uh, ice cream.
If you read that and made any sound other than ‘YAAAAS’, then I’m afraid we can’t be friends. The idea that DmC Dante will never get another game fills me with loathing for the very fact this game was waved under my nose as a soft reboot for a franchise with great combat but poor plots, and managed to build substantially on both. I adore this game’s combat, and if new Dante and Posh Virgil don’t get another chance to appear then that would be one of the most profoundly disappointing and stupid decisions in gaming ever.
Devil May Cry 5 was a welcome addition to the franchise that I definitely enjoyed, but I couldn’t help but be constantly reminded while playing it of how much I preferred the DmC style of combat, and how much better I was at building and maintaining combos in the latter… Apart from when playing as V of course, Mr Combo himself.
Now that mainline Devil May Cry has had its first game in eleven years, surely it’s only fair that DmC: Devil May Cry gets a sequel too.
It seems I can’t do a list feature without mentioning a game that was my ‘favourite’ of some time / generation / console or whatever… That doesn’t subtract from the fact that Dark Chronicle was the first game since its predecessor, Dark Cloud (Which was the first ever) that I could point at a game and call it my favourite of all time.
The ending of Dark Chronicle – whilst providing a definitive and satisfying ending for the game and story – was open enough that more games could easily be made featuring the wrench-wielding manic mechanic I loved playing hundreds of hours as.
The announcement of Dark Chronicle’s re-release on Playstation 4 for January 2016 was one of the happiest pieces of gaming news I’ve ever received, and I adored every minute spent of the 150 hours it took me to get the Platinum for it. All the grinding for the trophy for getting a monster transformation to its final form made me even love using the Froggy I’d chosen for this incredibly daunting task.
I totally understand that lots of people love the Ni No Kuni, Yo Kai Watch and Professor Layton franchises, but COME ON LEVEL5, make another Dark Cloud / Chronicle game! The people demand it!
Thank you for reading my top five picks for video game protagonists that I want to see have another game. Let me know your choices in the comments and on Twitter @MaliceVER. You should follow @RespawningUK as well because why wouldn’t you?
I’m also easy to find on YouTube, Void Euphoric Records, and a subscribe would be most appreciated too! You’ll hear more from me soon! *Drops smoke bomb and disappears*
