We’re back with yet another installment of Respawning’s Let’s Talk series, where every Friday we get every one of our charismatic writers together to discuss a new topic! This week we look at today’s release… Well re-release of Marvel Studio’s Avengers Endgame. With only 8 minutes of additional footage, the record breaking superhero blockbuster is getting one more short run in cinemas before Tuesdays release of Spider-Man: Far From Home. The reason for this is more than likely to close the small gap on Avatar for highest grossing movie of all time but do we agree with it and more importantly will we be going? Let’s talk: Does Avengers Endgame need a re-release?

Yes and yes! Now I’m not saying that we need a re-release for those additional eight minutes as the version we got in cinemas was perfection, in fact I even gave it full marks in my review. No, the reason we need this re-release is that I don’t want to live in a world where Avatar is still the highest grossing movie of all time, that just doesn’t sit well with me. So I say all power to Kevin Feige (our Lord & Saviour, praise be onto him) and the rest of the guys at Marvel Studios for going after that record, they sure as hell deserve it. Though given the recent Fox deal, Disney wins either way!
Will I be going to watch it though? Of course I will. I did chuckle when it was announced that there would only be eight minutes added onto the giant three hour run time but I’d be lying if I said I don’t need those eight minutes in my life the way I need oxygen and cheese. So yeah chances are that I will be sat in the cinema for a fourth time watching what is my outright favourite movie of the year as you read these very words.

Endgame was a pretty great movie, and a worthy culmination of the last ten years of the Marvel cinematic universe. But there’s no way in hell this thing should get another release because they slapped extra footage onto it.
The first bit of extra footage we know of is a mid-credits scene that amounts to a mini-doco on Stan Lee, thanking him for creating Marvel characters. Neat, but very ‘extra on a DvD’, especially as it’s completely unrelated to the movie itself. The other bit of footage is the Hulk rescuing some little girl from a fire – post-credits. Oh, and there’s also a Spiderman: Far From Home preview.
Does that really sound worth the price of another movie ticket, if you’ve already seen the movie already? Nothing is really added to the film, and certainly not narrative-wise; there are rumours of a scene where Thanos’ soul talks to Gamora’s that was cut, but if that scene really existed it’s not here, so…
Now, there’s some speculation that Disney’s done this in order to artificially extend the time Endgame is in cinemas, so that it can potentially dethrone Avatar as the highest grossing movie. Considering what they’re offering as extra footage, I’d say that sounds likely. I wouldn’t recommend you support this sort of behaviour with your wallet – tell Disney to leave the re-releases til a few years down the line as part of a Marvel Movie Marathon at niche theatres or something.

No. A million times, no. Avengers: Endgame is only doing this to try and beat Avatar’s records, and as a result, Avengers: Endgame will forever be known solely as ‘that Marvel film that had to release twice to try and beat Avatar’.
Avatar did it in one go. You’ve already failed your goal Marvel. Move on.

Yes, yes 1000 times yes. What’s wrong with Marvel wanting to beat out Avatar? It’s a much better film, possibly the best cinematic experience i’ve ever had, so of course it should be creme de la creme. It is a very cheeky way of doing it but i’d happily see this movie in the cinema again (after only seeing it twice so far) so for someone like me it makes it EVEN more worth going back.
Endgame is a masterpiece and should be at the top of every movie list going. Gimme more!

The short and simple answer is No, Avengers Endgame does not need a cinematic re-release. No film needs a re-release 30 seconds after it’s left the cinemas for a first time. Yes I get that they’re putting in extra bits and bobs but it annoys me that they are taking advantage of the love of their fans!

Avengers: Endgame was a good film but crippled for me by its length, as three hours for a superhero movie is too long. I don’t care that it was the 22nd film in the franchise that was there to wrap everything up, it’s TOO DAMN LONG! If the re-release was an abbreviated cut, maybe down to two and a bit hours (max!) then I’d be happier with it.
I’m still going to see it in the cinema again as I’m a Marvel fan boy, and to see if it can push my rating of it from an 8 out of 10 to a higher plateau, but time will tell in that regard.
I’m looking forward to when it’s out on 4K on 2nd September so I can watch it in bursts.
