The Halloween reboot-quel is out now, and is honestly incredible; so to celebrate, we’ve discussed our favourite horror movies and slasher flicks! Expect lots of scares and blood ahead…

I’ve never really been one for mainstream horror; I have to be in a very specific and peculiar mood to actually want to seek out and watch something frightening, and I usually spend my Halloweens either trick-or-treating, or more recently out with the lads in full costume, hitting the town as a group of vampires or such.

But there is one horror franchise that I return to over and over… And it’s not one you’d find in a cinema.

No; have you ever heard of the SCP project? It’s one of the most ambitious and creative collaborative writing groups out there, with anyone able to contribute short sci-fi and/or horror stories to the larger project, centred around a secretive foundation which ‘Secures, Contains, and Protects’ a host of supernatural creatures and items, each assigned a number and a place in the overall universe.

From Indestructible lizards and Nerf guns that cause anything they hit to transform into something inferior, to statues that cause natural disasters if a mother doesn’t burn her newborn baby as a sacrifice or paintings that jump out from the wall and murder passers-by, the foundation is a library of some of the most creative and horrifying fiction out there, and it’s all free on the web.

But if you’re not in the mood for reading, let me point you the way of TheVolgun, a talented Irish voice actor who’s made it his work to put a voice to the various files in the catalogue, breathing a whole new life into the series by way of his YouTube channel. Check him out, if you dare.

I’m definitely not a horror fan. I’m not afraid to admit that I’m a pansey. Sure. Though there is one horror film that I will always be up for watching. Scream. An amazing parody of the slasher flick by a master of then genre Wes Craven, there’s plently in Scream to entertain if you’re into horror, comedy or drama. Taking a shot at all the old cliches that plagued the genre in the 80s, Wes crafts an amazing spin on the old formula without going too far into the realms of parody to make it a straight up comedy. To top all that off you get one of the best story twists in recent memory that wasn’t orchestrated by M. Night Shyamalan.

So I have two contenders. One is my favorite HORROR film of all time and one is my favorite HALLOWEEN movie of all time, and by that I mean the best movie to get me in the spooky mood of Halloween.

The first is The Thing. This movie is balls off the wall crazy and I love it. The concept, the mood, the atmosphere, the music, and the practical effects are all so amazing and effective it’ll leave you cuddled up in suspense every time.

The other one is one I would like to talk a lot more about. Trick or Treat in my opinion is the only acceptable movie to watch during Halloween. This movie perfectly captures the entire mood of this spooky season into a couple of short stories that intertwine with one another. Growing up in Pakistan I’ve always admired Halloween and it’s definitely one of my favorite times of the year, but I never really got to go out trick or treating around neighborhoods and all that or even have that many people around me as enthusiastic about Halloween as me – So this movie was just there to drive home the fact on how much I love this time of year. Definitely go check it out.

And if you want a huge collection of horror films to check, especially some of the more obscure ones from the 80’s, check out Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness, where James Rolfe reviews a horror movie every day for the month of October. You’ll definitely find a few favorites there.

I’m not the biggest fan of horror films – I’ve just never really liked it as a genre… I have enjoyed Horror Spoof films though. One in particular called Black Sheep – It’s set in New Zealand where this guy heads to the family farm to get his siblings to buy his portion of the farm, unfortunately, he’s scared of sheep; his worst fears come true and a group of sheep go rogue and start killing everyone. I started watching it as a mistake, but it was definitely the best mistake to watch.
