Pokémon Champions lands on Nintendo Switch on 8 April, while the mobile version is set to arrive later this year. The latest update also drops fresh details on returning Pokémon, a Starter Pack, Nintendo Switch 2 enhancements, and the game’s big competitive debut.
The Pokémon Company International says Pokémon Champions is built to bring core Pokémon battling to more players, with both Switch and smartphone users able to throw down in strategic matches using different Pokémon types, Abilities and move sets. In other words, it is keeping the battle side of Pokémon front and centre.
Better still, Pokémon HOME connectivity is included, so players can bring in qualifying Pokémon from previous core games and Pokémon GO. That means longtime partner Pokémon are not being left behind for this one, which feels like the right call.
Pokémon Champions is taking over competitive play
Pokémon Champions will become the main platform for Video Game Championships at all Play! Pokémon Premier Events, starting with the Indianapolis Regional Championships from 29 to 31 May.
That shift continues with the Turin Special Championships from 6 to 7 June, the North America International Championships from 12 to 14 June, and the Pokémon World Championships from 28 to 30 August. So yes, Pokémon Champions is not easing into the competitive scene quietly. It is kicking the door open and walking straight onto the main stage.
Starter Pack and Nintendo Switch 2 update available at launch
Also arriving on 8 April is the Pokémon Champions + Starter Pack. This bundle includes the base game alongside extra in-game bonuses designed to help with early progression.
Players on Nintendo Switch 2 will also get enhanced visual performance through a free update available from launch day. An internet connection is required to download the update before playing.

Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar and Mega Feraligatr return
Several Mega-Evolved Pokémon are also making the jump into Pokémon Champions, including Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar and Mega Feraligatr. These Pokémon first appeared in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and arrive here with new Abilities in tow.
Mega Meganium brings the new Ability Mega Sol, which lets it use moves as though the weather were harsh sunlight.
Mega Emboar gets Mold Breaker, allowing it to ignore opposing Abilities when using moves.
Meanwhile, Mega Feraligatr picks up Dragonize, which turns its Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and boosts their power by 20%. Not bad if you enjoy your crocodiles with a bit more bite.
