From Monkey Island legend Ron Gilbert comes a roguelite where dying is part of the fun

Death By Scrolling, the fast-paced roguelite from Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park creator Ron Gilbert, has officially launched on Steam. Brought to you by MicroProse and Terrible Toybox NZ, this chaotic, vertically-scrolling dungeon crawler invites you to outrun Death, beat up demonic office workers, and maybe-just maybe-pay your way out of the afterlife.

Welcome to Purgatory Inc. – No refunds, no breaks, no problem

In Death By Scrolling, you’re thrown into the chaotic underworld of Purgatory Inc., where everything scrolls upward, lava is a workplace hazard, and the Reaper himself is hot on your heels. Pick from a colourful cast of tragically stylish heroes, smash through monsters, and climb your way toward the world’s most extortionate river crossing.

To mark launch day, there’s a shiny new trailer out now-packed with frantic fights, cursed comedy, and more stupidly creative ways to die than you’ll know what to do with.

Death’s never looked this good – or this vertical

Key features include:

  • Misfit Mayhem – Pick your favourite oddball from a cast of doomed souls, each with their own perks, powers, and questionable fashion choices.
  • Non-Stop Vertical Action – The screen scrolls. The lava rises. You move, or you melt.
  • The Reaper’s on Payroll – Death is coming. You can dodge him, delay him, or slap him silly-but he always clocks back in.
  • Shop ’til You’re (Un)Dead – Gather gold and gems to upgrade your gear via Purgatory’s finest merchants-slash-capitalist opportunists.
  • Side Quests & Bonus Runs – Optional missions mean more loot, more laughs, and maybe a bit of trauma.
  • Enemies with Day Jobs – Face off against demonic pests and overworked bosses who hate you slightly less than their own lives.
  • Lore, Laughs & Layers of Bureaucracy – Dive into a witty narrative full of absurd afterlife admin and sharp-tongued banter.
  • Global Leaderboards – Think you’re the best at being dead? Prove it.
