This week on Trash Talk, the column where I scour Reddit for the most interesting video gaming topic: What game / has any game ever driven you to break your controller?
I think game rage has affected us all at some point in our lives, and I know I’ve broken quite a few controllers over the years. The instance I’ve picked for this week happened during a late night and inebriated session on a game I haven’t played since: For Honor.
I never really got into this game but one night after a rough day at work and a few too many alcoholic beverages, I had a strong desire to dip back into it for a bit. I played back when your only choice of Hero was Samurai, Viking or Knight, so I played as a Knight. The first half an hour went fairly well, but as the blurred vision seeped in over the course of the session I found the game being less forgiving, to the point I failed the same basic objective, and therefore the mission more than a couple of times.
What was intended as a frustrated yet gentle tossing the controller onto the table in front of me, transformed mid-throw into an angry hurling at the wall opposite. I still don’t understand why I ever thought I’d be good at the game, and can only conclude the brief burst of success earlier in the evening had allowed me to believe that I would be consistently good. As if the story couldn’t be more shameful, I was only playing against bots offline, so there were no worthwhile rewards or stakes on the line whatsoever. Woe to the incompetent, intoxicated, incandescent gamer.
Let me know in the comments or on the Reddit thread what your pick would be!
