Agent 64: Spies Never Die launches today on PC via Steam, bringing old-school spy FPS action, co-op missions and gloriously chaotic multiplayer along for the ride.

Developed by solo creator Replicant D6, the game takes plenty of inspiration from the N64 era. However, it also adds modern features including online co-op, eight-player multiplayer and custom lobbies packed with ridiculous modifiers.

Console release dates are also planned for a later date.

Save the world, preferably without ruining the tux

Players step into the polished shoes of secret agent John Walter, whose latest assignment involves stopping his arch-nemesis, Dominic Pulp.

The 14-mission campaign can be tackled solo or with up to four players through local and online co-op. Missions involve shootouts, hostage rescues, stolen secret plans and the occasional disguise.

Better still, objectives can be completed in any order.

Increasing the difficulty adds more objectives and opens additional areas within each level. So, becoming a top-tier spy involves more than simply making enemies fall over faster.

The arsenal also jumps between eras. Players can grab everything from World War-era machine guns to futuristic Plasma Rifles, while combat supports both hip firing and aiming down sights.

Agent 64 multiplayer embraces N64-style chaos

The multiplayer side goes all-in on nostalgic couch competition.

Four-player local splitscreen is available alongside eight-player online deathmatch, with support for up to eight additional bots.

There are also extra modes to shake things up. Zone works like a king-of-the-hill battle for territory, while Briefcase tasks players with holding classified documents longer than everyone else.

Then come the cheats.

As per the press release, custom online lobbies include more than 70 cheats and modifiers. Options include Big Heads, Melee Disarms, slower bullets and randomised weapons.

In other words, things can get silly very quickly.

“Calling a game a love letter to the ‘90s sounds a bit cliché, but I think there’s no better way to describe Agent 64,” said solo developer Replicant D6.

“It’s a brand new experience for gamers who never played Rare’s N64 masterpieces, and instantly familiar territory for anyone raised on the classics, while modernizing a beloved formula.”

Agent 64: Spies Never Die is available today on PC via Steam with English, French and Japanese language support.

The base game costs £17.47 / $21.64. Meanwhile, a Supporter’s Edition featuring the Original Soundtrack and a golden pistol skin is coming soon to Steam for $29.64, with UK pricing still to be confirmed.
