Funcom just dropped some spicy news for Dune: Awakening fans at Gamescom 2025. Arrakis isn’t staying still — Chapter 2, the game’s first major free update, is arriving September 10, alongside The Lost Harvest DLC. Oh, and if you’ve been sitting on the fence, there’s a free trial running through August 24 so you can dip your toes (and probably get them burned by the sand) before committing.

Chapter 2 – Free Story Update

Remember that cliffhanger at the end of the base game? Yeah, Funcom’s finally paying that off. Chapter 2 continues the main storyline with new characters, new locations, and plenty of intrigue to drag you deeper into the Imperium’s darkest corners.

On top of the narrative, expect fresh world content like contracts, dynamic encounters, and items. Even character customization gets an upgrade with new hairstyles and a re-customization feature for existing characters. Finally, a chance to fix that haircut you instantly regretted.

The Lost Harvest DLC ($12.99)

Launching alongside Chapter 2 is The Lost Harvest, a standalone story where a crashed spice harvester hides a secret that could change everything. The DLC also drops in new cosmetics, including the first cosmetic vehicle — the Treadwheel — plus building sets, decorations, armor, and weapons.

Before you ask: nope, these aren’t pay-to-win. Just like in the base game, everything needs to be crafted. The DLC is included in the Season Pass, Deluxe, and Ultimate Editions if you’re already invested.

Free Trial – August 20–24

Curious about life on Arrakis but don’t want to drop the cash yet? Steam is offering a 10-hour free trial during Gamescom. Progress carries over if you buy the game, meaning your desert survival skills won’t go to waste. The trial is limited to the Hagga Basin map, but you’ll still run into other players out in the sand.

Soundtrack Vinyl for the Hardcore Fans

For those who prefer their spice in audio form, Funcom also announced vinyl pre-orders for the Dune: Awakening soundtrack, composed by Knut Avenstroup Haugen and recorded at London’s legendary AIR Studios.

So whether you’re here for the free trial, the new story chapter, or just want to decorate your sand fortress with fancy new gear, September is looking like a good time to return to Arrakis.
