The Witcher 3 returned with a remaster and a new expansion, Silent Hill: Townfall finally found a date and a two-hour show in Cologne supplied more than enough to argue about on the walk home.
Gamescom is now properly under way, but last night belonged to Opening Night Live. Geoff Keighley’s two-hour curtain-raiser from Cologne did what this show does best. It mixed long-awaited updates with a few left-field reveals, then ended on the kind of announcement designed to send people straight to group chats.
There was plenty of padding, as ever, but the headline acts landed.
The big closer: The Witcher 3 returns
The night’s standout was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered. CD PROJEKT RED is releasing the upgrade on 29 September 2026, with visual, performance, movement and combat improvements, plus a native Nintendo Switch 2 version.
It is a free upgrade for owners on qualifying platforms. Current owners of The Witcher 3 can also now claim Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine at no additional cost.
The surprise did not end there. Songs of the Past is a new, paid expansion set for 2027. It takes Geralt to Letten, a new region that looks idyllic at first glance and almost certainly will not stay that way for long.
That distinction is worth making clear. The old expansions are now free for current owners. The newly announced third expansion is a separate paid release.
September is suddenly very crowded
Silent Hill: Townfall used its cast-reveal trailer to confirm a 24 September 2026 launch. It looks suffocating in the best way and has put itself straight back on the horror calendar.
Remedy’s Control Resonant is due on exactly the same day. Its new trailer leans hard into the unnerving, reality-bending style that made the first game such a standout. Two of the year’s most promising supernatural games landing together is wildly inconsiderate scheduling.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is closer still. Rebel Wolves’ vampire RPG arrives on 3 September and its launch trailer makes a strong case for the game’s day-and-night identity.
The major reveals and returns
Ubisoft revealed Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Tactics, a single-player tactics game targeting 2027. It is a sharp change of pace for the series and one of the night’s more intriguing surprises.
Gears of War: E-Day got a campaign trailer and an October 6 release date. The footage spent more time on the human cost of Emergence Day than on cover shooting, which was the right call.
NetEase’s free-to-play urban action RPG Ananta now has a 15 January 2027 launch date. Its new trailer is as busy as ever, with vehicle chases, wild traversal and the kind of open-world mayhem that invites immediate comparisons to several much bigger games.
HoYoverse also had a broad night. It revealed the dark fantasy co-op action project Nodus Fall, while its planet-building life sim Petit Planet received a winter 2026 window.
Old favourites get another go
Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake is a proper 3D remake that includes the original game’s expansions. For a community that has kept the 1999 classic alive for decades, the announcement was exactly the sort of pleasant disbelief that makes a Gamescom show worthwhile.
Mega Man: Dual Override returned with a trailer teasing Proto Man. Capcom has not overcomplicated the pitch. It is a new 2D Mega Man game and it looks like one.
Rayman Legends Retold showed off a new Macarena musical level ahead of its 1 October release. It is silly, it is very Rayman and that is entirely the point.
The final chapter of Square Enix’s remake project, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, also appeared with a new trailer and a spring 2027 release window.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches tomorrow, 27 August. Path of Exile 2 leaves early access with version 1.0 on 11 December. Aion 2 follows on 5 October and Exodus finally has a date: 7 April 2027.
Metro 2039 remains set for February 2027. Turok: Origins has shifted to spring 2027. Stage Tour, the rock-band revival with a seriously strong licensed track list, arrives on 10 December.
The odd ones
Snoop Dogg is the next celebrity Elusive Target in Hitman: World of Assassination from 27 August to 26 September. He is playing marijuana entrepreneur Dr. Syrus Cane rather than simply appearing as himself, which somehow makes the whole thing even more Hitman.
1666: Amsterdam entered Early Access after an announcement that had seemed trapped in development limbo for more than a decade. LEGO Skylines looks exactly as charming as a brick-built city builder ought to, while Like or Die may yet turn its streamer-survival premise into either sharp satire or a loud disaster. Probably both.
Final thoughts
Opening Night Live did not deliver a single era-defining surprise and it did not need to. What it delivered was a confident opening salvo: a substantial Witcher return, a stack of release dates, an overdue Silent Hill update and several projects that feel less predictable than the usual sequel-and-remaster conveyor belt.
If this was only the opening act for Gamescom, Cologne has set a high bar for the rest of the week.
