TLDR: You need to watch this shit. It’s wild.
No for real though Devilman Crybaby is such a huge breath of fresh air for me. I haven’t binged an anime in so long that was this fucking good.
A lot of people might be familiar of Go Nagai’s work Devilman which I have not dared to touch because I dunno where to start and a lot of people loved it. I’ve only seen a few clips of the OVA’s and panels of the manga and I can certainly say it looks cool if not goofy and unintentionally funny at times.

So what caught my eye first about Devilman Crybaby was the art style. It looked familiar, before watching it I then found out that the guy who directed Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong The Animation directed this and boy does it show. It’s hard to describe his art but it’s simplistic yet it isn’t. I’m sure the show had a budget close to Unlimited Budget Works since it’s Netflix and all but the use of fancy animation is used sparingly and it works in it’s favor greatly. The designs of the characters, mainly Devilman and Ryo really caught my eye. Especially Ryo’s big stupid fucking coat. Seriously it’s so dumb and I want it. So yea, the art is just fantastic and the animation is fluid and interesting to look at. It may not look that nice to a lot of people but it’s certainly unique.
DEBIRUMAN
Now the story is just fucking weird. I won’t say this is a spoilery review but I might discuss a few things here and there that some might consider spoilers.
So the story is about his little cutie by named Fudo Akira or Akira Fudo I forget how you’re supposed to say it but whatever! Anyways he’s a little bitch that cries about everything and people call him a crybaby. Get it? One day he’s protecting this girl – that he’s been living with for like 10 years cause his parents abandoned him – from some hooligans who spit hot fire yo (These hooligans are the best characters ever trust me I love them so much) and in comes Ryo. This guy with a dumb haircut and an even dumber big white coat (Someone please get me this coat) He is Akiras super old friend who is just about his age but is like a super genius and is a professor some place. He explains some shit and then they go to some rave with a whole lotta sex and drugs and demons and all of a sudden Akira is half human, half demon, and all hunk. He even looks different and gets a bigger dick for fucks sake. But yea that’s just the first episode and basically the premise. Hilarity ensues.
Now the story is not as bad and as shallow as I am making it out to be. It’s quite good and they’re some amazing character moments here and there but I also wouldn’t say the story is crazy good. It’s pretty average but gets really fucking interesting around the end where some Neon Genesis Evangelion shit is pulled but also cut too short. Seriously the last two episode are these weirdly paced fever dreams and I love it. Mainly the characters stand out the most and the story takes a bit of back seat somewhere in the middle just to have some fun and interesting moments. And there are some really good emotional moments that really got to me at some points.

Man this soundtrack is just so fun. It’s this weird stupid club music that has a stupid 4×4 bass in the back and then it hits you with some sick ass dubstep. Then when it gets really heated it’ll throw some mad hype orchestral at ya. And when you want to ascend this mortal real they’ll play Devil no Uta. Nah just kidding they just play that as a little joke at one point but still it was good shit.

Just go watch it okay? This shit is so good, it’s made me want to go back and watch the old crappy looking Devilman and also find out what Devilman Lady(???) is about.
