Today, Nintendo announced a new member of the Nintendo Switch family – The Nintendo Switch Lite; a budget version of the popular Handheld / Console-hybrid system that aims to bring a Handheld-exclusive experience to players at a far cheaper price point of $199.99 (Approx. £160.00) as compared to the Nintendo Switch’s $299.99 (£274.99).
The Switch Lite removes potentially ‘unwanted’ features of the base Nintendo Switch to achieve this lower price point, removing the HD Rumble, IR Sensor, Tabletop and TV (Docked) Modes, and featuring a 5.5 inch 1280×720 display as opposed to the base Nintendo Switch’s 6.2 inch 1280×720 display. It also features un-removeable JoyCons, meaning motion-oriented games such as 1-2 Switch! or Let’s Dance 2020 will not be playable, but core games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be fully playable with no compromise.
It is assumed that there is a performance hit to be taken from the cheaper hardware, but the full extent has yet to be revealed.
Combined with this, the Nintendo Switch originally only came in ‘Grey’, with some changes to the JoyCon colours such as ‘Grey’, ‘Neon Red’, ‘Neon Blue’, and so forth – The Nintendo Switch Lite will launch with three colours encompassing both the console and the fused JoyCons; Yellow, Turquoise and Grey (Albeit a lighter grey than the base Nintendo Switch).
The Nintendo Switch Lite will launch on 20/09/2019.
